Escape From Botany Bay

Sweeney Todd in Australia

He sat on his filthy mat, a slight smile playing on his lips. Sweeney Todd’s mad feverish eyes seemed to dance as he smirked in the gloom. His clenched fists gave the only sign to his anxiousness. Silently, he mouthed the words, his name, for Barker was no more. Barker had been a kind and gentle man. The mad man who sat and smirked had blood on his hands, and he was glad of it. Sweeney Todd was a new name, a new beginning, an old grudge.  “Soon…soon…” he murmured.

Sweeney's Sentence

A mysterious connection between Sweeney Todd and Jack Sparrow!

“Mr. Todd you are hereby charged with the disappearances and murders of several men of Fleet St. whom were last heard of going to your establishment for a shave. From our findings your now deceased accomplice would take the men and turn them into meat pies and sell them to the public. Do you deny this Mr. Todd, or should we call you Mr. Benjamin Barker?”

Benjamin just sat there head lowered deep in remorse and sadness over his dear sweet Lucy, and the knowledge that he had almost killed his only child Johanna. Todd, as he was known during these murders had died that day after his throat had been slit and so the old man Benjamin Barker was alive once more.

By The Sea?

What's the story behind the song?

“Mr. T, did you have a good sleep last night?” asked Mrs. Lovett as she stepped into Sweeney Todd’s barbershop one Tuesday morning. “I didn’t hear you pacing around as much as normal, love.”

“Mmm hmm” muttered Mr. Todd from his perch in the barber chair, his eyes staring blankly out the huge window facing Fleet Street.

“I’ll take that as a yes then” Mrs. Lovett answered, walking up behind him and placing a hand on his stiff shoulder. Nothing Mr. Todd said or did today was going to spoil her perfectly good mood. When Mr. T didn’t seem to be replying with much enthusiasm, she just couldn’t hold it in:

“Oooh Mr. Todd” she gasped, and gave him a quite forceful peck on the cheek. “I’m so happy!” another peck….

Was I Worse Off?

What would have happened if Sweeney hadn't recognised the Beggar Woman?

Elizabeth Grove's story explores an alternative ending -

Finally, it was done. That blasted woman, who stood in her way for so many years, was gone. Killed by her own husband's hand, actually. She wondered briefly if Mr. Todd knew the nature of the crazy beggar woman whose throat he had so mercilessly slit, but decided against it just as swiftly. He couldn't have; he'd done everything for "his Lucy". He could never have willingly - no, knowingly - killed her.

She was just lucky to get the wretch into the furnace before Mr. Todd came into the basement. He'd heard her scream, and like the gentleman he was rushed in to help her. She was actually quite humbled by the experience; Mr. Todd had never shown any real care towards her. Every "loving" comment he'd made seemed strangely sarcastic, almost sneering. Though, this time, his concern seemed genuine. Unfortunately, they never found Toby, and the lad that had been in the barber shop had fled long before they were able to return upstairs.
